Bad breath is the ultimate social turnoff. It’s not only a logical thought and a generally accepted opinion, but also the result of a 2012 survey conducted by an e-cig company. It’s also interesting to notice that halitosis is considered one of the most detrimental aspects of social interactions by both genders: the perception is, therefore, transversal.
The same results were confirmed even more recently by another research, this time conducted by the Oral Health Foundation, which has revealed, once again, how halitosis is the number one reason people would not ask somebody for a second date. Specifically, 35% of the interviewed positions bad breath on top of the list of what is considered unattractive, followed by “bad chat” (11%) and “bad clothes” (2%).
Doctor Nigel Carter, CEO of the Oral Health Foundation, comments: “This research highlights the very important, and close, relationship between oral health and attraction. We all know that a healthy smile can be a very powerful instrument for attracting a partner and avoiding bad breath is a key part of achieving this. Bad breath is a very common problem and there are many different causes, it’s not always down to that cheese and onion sandwich at lunchtime.”
Usually, halitosis is caused by the gases released by the bacteria that coat an individual’s teeth, tongue and gums. When it’s not persistent, bad breath can easily be treated by just brushing your teeth three times a day, after every meal, and by flossing.
However, there are a series of general rules that anyone should always follow to keep their mouth halitosis-free.
Let’s take a look at the most common six ways to prevent bad breath.
- Brush your teeth after every meal: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Every brushing session should last from two to three minutes to be effective in its removal of food debris and plaque. It is essential that you always brush your teeth before going to bed at night.
- Scrape your tongue: every time you brush your teeth, do not forget to take care of your tongue, too. Scraping your tongue will allow you to remove any residual of food or bacteria on the surface of your taste buds and folds. There are handy tools specifically designed for this activity: they are called tongue scrapers.
- Floss daily: you should floss your teeth at least once a day, preferably before going to bed. Flossing will allow you to remove food debris from in between your teeth, in areas that can hardly be reached by your toothbrush. Flossing is one of the most effective ways to avoid halitosis, as it removes many of the bacteria hiding in the most unreachable areas of the mouth.
- Use a mouth rinse: especially if you suffer from persistent halitosis, a good mouth rinse can help you manage chronic bad breath. It is, however, crucial that you do quick rinses of mouth rinse mixed with clean water. Peppermint oil can also be added to the mix for a more beneficial effect.
- Go to your dentists twice a year: every six months you should book an appointment with your dentist and have a professional cleaning session. The occasion will also be perfect for assessing the conditions of your mouth and taking care of any problem before it develops any further.
- Take care of your mouth: by avoiding too much sugared food (or soda) and tobacco products. Essentially, we are asking you to quit smoking, as smoking is bad for your entire body and for your mouth too. It also contributes to chronic bad breath.
